I went down a rabbit hole recently, not one of those conspiracy theories or late-night internet binges that lead to you regretting time ill-spent at 3 am in the morning. Rather, I fell into a topic that on the surface seemed neither interesting nor appealing to me – Insurance. When I think of insurance, my first thought is “why”. Why would I, a 29 year old Pakistani male living in his parents’ house in Lahore need insurance? What utility could it possibly bring me?
Reality of Adulting in Pakistan
But as I scratched away at it, especially as to how it pertains to me, certain aspects started to make sense. Let’s be real for a second. Somewhere between landing that first “real” paycheck and realizing that electricity bills now keep you up at night, we all hit a wall. It’s called Adulting. And in Pakistan, Adulting is basically a high-stakes game of Ludo where you’re one bad roll away from being sent back to the start.
If you’re a 90’s kid or identify as a millennial or Gen-Z, chances are that you’re finally buying your own wheels and maybe even looking at apartments that aren’t our parents’ basement. We’re financially independent, but we’re also one “Karachi ki baarish waala khadda” or one “Lahore biker zigzag” away from a very expensive headache.
Beyond the “Dusty Folder” Stereotype
Most of us hear the word “Insurance” and think of uncles in suits holding dusty folders or Manchester United’s old sponsor AIG (damn that was a cool look on their jerseys back in the day). But still, no one ever explained to me what AIG did, or what insurance does. Thankfully, I researched so you don’t have to.
“Undo” Button for Real Life
Here’s the tea: Car insurance is actually the ultimate life hack. It’s the “Undo” button for real life. Picture this: after years of grinding, you finally save up enough money for that new Civic, Cultus, or Corolla. That new car smell is as enchanting as the shine upon the hood of the car, and you are admiring this smell as you drive it down the road when BAM!! A Rickshaw blindsides you and hits you in the rear. Instant 50k repair bill…or not? Insurance would literally undo the damages, both financial and literal, preventing a dent to both your wallet and car.
Secure Your Independence
Going down that rabbit hole on insurance taught me this: Don’t wait for a crisis to realize you need a safety net. Being smart with your money isn’t just about investing in crypto or gold; it’s about making sure the life you’re building doesn’t crumble because of a pothole on Shahrah-e-Faisal or some rickshaw drivers’ negligence.
You’ve got the independence. Now get the peace of mind. Your future self will thank you (and your bank account definitely will).
