Remember the feeling of getting the keys to your first car? Or that first night in your own apartment? That new car smell? The ambience of an empty apartment full of potential? It’s unmatched. And the realization that you made this happen? Priceless. But here’s the thing about nice things in Pakistan: they attract drama.
We spend weeks researching the best ceramic coating for our cars or the perfect minimalist sofa for the lounge. But we spend zero minutes thinking about what happens if—God forbid—things go south. Let me run a few scenarios by you:
“Get Your Money Back” Card
How many times have you or someone you know had their car stolen? Perhaps one or two times, and if you are lucky, zero. But luck doesn’t last forever. Better to have a safeguard, and I’m not talking about a certain soapy commander. Car theft and snatching are real. Comprehensive insurance isn’t a luxury; it’s your “get your money back” card. If you’re paying a premium, you’re buying the right to sleep soundly at night.
Don’t Risk Your Life Over a Phone
This one time, a group of my friends and family in Karachi were stopped at a traffic signal and robbed at gunpoint. Funnily enough, the only person with mobile phone insurance was the one whose phone wasn’t stolen. The robbers, with a pistol in hand, asked everyone to cough up their phones, which they did, except for my cousin, who sneakily dropped his phone to the floor unbeknownst to the robbers and pretended he was not carrying one.
Even though he was covered! Don’t be like my cousin, don’t be like Timmy, and don’t risk your life over a phone. In this case, especially if you live in Karachi, mobile phone insurance can double as life insurance.

“Atlantis” Effect: Dealing with Urban Flooding
While we’re on the topic of Karachi, another example I’d like to share is related to the yearly/bi-yearly floods. Karachi, and other cities in our country, for that matter- aren’t exactly built like Atlantis (who knows maybe they are, Atlantis did sink after all…). Anyways, there are too many instances of people I know losing everything they own in the floods. Especially if you live on the ground floor.
It is too easy to become a victim of nature, and trust me when I say climate change is only going to get worse. You need a fallback, and that’s where insurance can be your saving grace. Whether it’s a short circuit or urban flooding, home insurance covers the stuff inside your house, too. Think of it as a warranty for your entire lifestyle.
Surviving the Dreaded “Biker Scuff”
Then there is the dreaded “Biker Scuff”. We’ve all been there. You’re stopped at a signal, motionless, literally there is no reason for anything untoward to possibly happen, and crunch—a bike slides into your door. Whether you are worried about your own ride or the damage caused by others, having the right bike insurance or car coverage changes the entire dynamic. Instead of getting into a street fight, wouldn’t you rather just say, “Don’t worry, I’m covered,” and drive away with your blood pressure intact? I know I would.
Reality Check
Buying insurance isn’t “expecting the worst.” It’s actually the most confident move you can make. It says, “I’ve worked too hard for this to let a random accident take it away.” So, next time you’re upgrading your car or your space, add “Insurance” to the checklist. It’s the most adult thing you’ll do all year, and honestly? It feels pretty good to be the person who has their life together.
